[Virtual Server] could not be started because there is not enough physical memory or system resources available
February 20th, 2006 // 5:40 pm @ Amar
I recently came across a very strange problem. Tried it with both Virtual PC and Virtual Server. It just refused to start a second VM saying that could not be started because there is not enough physical memory or system resources available. I had over 10GB disk space free, and over 1.4 GB ram free. So I was sure resources was not a problem.
After fiddling with it a bit, a quick net search did the trick. If you have InCD software installed ( comes with Nero ) then it somehow causes this problem. If you dont want to uninstall your Nero installation, just go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and stop the InCD Helper service and set it to manual start instead of automatic. This instantly solved my problem and all 3 Windows 2003 VM’s booted up perfectly.
Thanks to Angus Logan’s Blog and Benjamin Day’s Blog for the help.

Hi,
If the problem is not with InCD, then there might be some other similar CD driver or other service which must be preventing your virtual machines to start. Try experimenting with any virtual cd managers or other similar services and see if turning one off solves your problem?

Hi,
I have the same problem…I can’t even get one VM started. I’ve tried looking at services with no effect. I can’t find the “boot.ini” file re the “/3G” switch. I’m running XP Professional and trying to run a WS 2003 VM.
Any help greatly appreciated!!

We’ve got the same problem. A server that was quite happily running 4 virtual servers on Friday was rebooted at the weekend and no I can only run 2!

Hi there,
I’ve been through this, our server have 8GB of RAM, and I used to use only the /3GB key. However, when added the /PAE key additionally to the 3GB it works just fine.
Changing the combination of these two keys may solve your issue.

Fixed! I have Sonic DigitalMedia by Roxio. Went to Tools > Options > Data and changed the CD Recording Options ‘Type’ to ‘Track at Once (TAO), Closed’.

Stopping InCD Helper certainly did the trick for me. Thanks heaps for the great time-saving trick. I already spent a day on this problem and would have had to spend a lot more efforts trying to get out of the hole, without this workaround.

I was running Win2003 R2 SP2 Enterprise X64 and Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on an HP proliant DL 380 with 6 GB RAM, I have /3GB en PAE switch set, DEP only enabled for OS.
I had the same problem, no Virtual cd software like nero or roxio nothing.
If i wanted to start even a single virtual machine wich i assigned 2,5 GB, it wouldn’t run…
After Uninstalling mcafee 8.5 Patch1, everything ran just fine….

I had the same problem with Mcafee 8.5 patch 1. I upgraded to patch 3 and that took care of it. Thanks!

The McAfee Update worked partially, but it just showed Turning on for a couple of seconds and again shows the same error. Duh… could this be due to the RAM constraint?
Also whats the minimum available RAM required for the installation?
Quick reply would be appreciated.

Found that the problem was caused by the /3GB tag I’d added into the boot.ini when I upgraded the RAM.
Once this was tag was removed, leaving the /PAE tag in there, all my virtual machines could then start up.

I have MS Virtual Server 2005 R2 with the same problem, ie my virtual computers are failing to start and this is the error I get in the event viewer “XXXX could not be started because there is not enough physical memory or system resources available”
I have McAfee ePO server which installs antivirus automatically hwne i computer joins the domain and it has installed McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i with Patch1.
After Reading from the above suggestions. I downloaded the Patch 6.1 and distributed it to all my computers, including the virtual server. now the virtual computers are starting without any problems.
Thank you all for your suggestions and thanks for hosting such a wonderful site.
